The Equation for Eureka Seven
I was talking to a friend just now and realized how to describe Eureka Seven through an equation:
(Gundam+surfboard) + (Cowboy Bebop)^2 + Evangelion + Transformers+ Macross Zero + Miazaki + Final Fantasy+ FLCL = Eureka Seven
Gundam for the robot and military environment
Cowboy Bebop for the awesome characters, and even awesomer character design
Evangelion for the emotional depth and bizzare imagery, and mecha with blood
Transformers because... the LFOs transform
Macross Zero for the high octane aireal combat
Miazaki because of the crazy ass stuff that happens, like the underground Earth.
Final Fantasy (The Spirits Within) for the whole "Gaia" thing, and space based weaponshooting into the Earth (or Scab)
FLCL (FuriKuri) for the wonderfully personal and entertaining narative through out the whole series and the beautifully done editing, all the half-second scenes that aren't fully brought to the viewer's attention that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. And you can't forget the awesome J-Rock in the background, gathering energy and momentum for the climax.
There're probably several other great anime influences that I'm missing, but this pretty much describes it for me. Season 1 was incredible. It wet my eyes a couple dozen times in the last 4-5 episodes. Season 2 was alright in comparison, even though I couldn't help my self at the end of every episode when Eureka and Renton say "tsuzuku" together ^_^
